Empirical Support

According to the American Psychological Association (APA-Division 12, 2021), DBT has been designated as an empirically supported treatment with strong research support for treating BPD.

Through more than 30 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) produced by nearly 20 independent research groups in 9 different countries, DBT has been scientifically tested and empirically supported to be more effective than "treatment as usual" in reducing NSSI, suicide attempts, and anger as well as improving general functioning (Kliem et al., 2010; Stoffers et al., as cited in Behavioral Tech  2021b; The Linehan Institute, 2021).

Moreover, a 2012 Cochrane review found that DBT is the only treatment with sufficient research to conclude it is effective in treating BPD (Behavioral Tech, 2021).
