Interpersonal Effectiveness Strategies

DBT teaches a range of skills to help with interpersonal effectiveness including: objective, relationship, and self-respect effectiveness.

Objective effectiveness is about the individual getting what they want in the relationship. DEAR MAN teaches a strategy for effective communication—clients learn to express their needs and wants in a way that is respectful to themselves and others—increasing the likelihood of positive outcomes.

Relationships effectiveness involves the individual recognizing the other significant person in the relationship also has needs and the necessity for reciprocation through the GIVE model.

Self-effectiveness utilizing the FAST model aids the client in holding true to their values and beliefs rather than seeking the approval of others.
